Speedway SuperAmerica LLC (SSA) receives 2009 Spirit Award for Community Outreach

Speedway SuperAmerica LLC (SSA) has been honored by Convenience Store News by being named the 2009 Spirit Award for Community Outreach winner for c-store companies with more than 500 stores for SSA’s involvement with Children’s Miracle Network! In its inaugural year, the Convenience Store News Spirit Awards for Community Outreach program celebrates convenience store retailers that are involved in community service programs aimed at bettering the lives of people in the markets they serve.

“It is the privilege of Speedway SuperAmerica to support the Children’s Miracle Network and the hospitals in our markets that benefit from the outstanding work of this fine organization,” said SSA President, Tony Kenney. “With more than 19,000 employees, many of us have had a child, niece or nephew, or neighbor in need of the services provided by the local children’s hospitals. Our associates are dedicated to making a difference in the communities they serve – especially, in the lives of kids!”

SSA has been a sponsor of the Children’s Miracle Network since 1992, facilitating the donation of more than $27 million during that time. In 2008, nearly $3 million was contributed to Children’s Miracle Network—an all time high for SSA, making the retailer one of the top 10 U.S. sponsors of the charity and the leader in the convenience store channel this past year.

“One of the reasons that our relationship with Children’s Miracle Network is so successful is because 100 percent of the funds collected are donated back to the children’s hospitals of the communities in which they were raised,” said SSA Vice President of Operations, Dave Heppner. “Our associates know that the hard work they put into raising money is going to benefit the hospital where the children of friends or relatives or even their own children are treated. I believe our associates would work hard for any cause; however, knowing that every cent is going to their community is such a motivator and only makes them that much more dedicated to Children’s Miracle Network.”

SSA Vice President of Marketing, Glenn Plumby, added, “Our success is due in large part to the passion of our associates, the generous support of our vendor partners, and the gracious giving of our customers. It is remarkable that in the economic climate in which we currently find ourselves, SSA and our customers continue to set a high standard of giving and to be an extraordinary example of caring.”

“Once again, Speedway has proven its commitment to Children’s Miracle Network’s mission of saving and improving the lives of children by raising money for children’s hospitals,” said Brian Hazelgren, Chief Development Officer of Children’s Miracle Network. “This award recognizes the company for its passion and dedication to the cause, and we join their industry in congratulating them for their incredible fundraising efforts.”

Speedway SuperAmerica will be honored in a special awards event in Houston, Texas, on November 4.

Speedway: Best Gas Brand in the Land

What do Microsoft, Google, Coca-Cola, M&Ms, Sony, Harley-Davidson, Southwest Airlines and Speedway SuperAmerica have in common? They are the best brands in the nation in their respective categories according to the 2009 EquiTrend® Brand Study conducted by Harris Interactive®. This renowned annual online study measures the bonds that exist between consumers and brands.

"Speedway SuperAmerica is proud to be the gasoline brand that U.S. consumers equate with a consistent exceptional customer experience," remarked Tony Kenney, president of Speedway SuperAmerica LLC (SSA). "There are many highly respected brands within the gasoline industry and to be ranked as the very best in the place where it matters most - in the eyes of the customer - is truly a great honor."

This year, EquiTrend® measured 1,120 brands across 39 categories. Survey data is based upon such important brand tenets as Familiarity, Quality, Purchase Consideration, Brand Expectations, Distinctiveness and Trust. These measurements determine the brand's rank both among its competitors and in comparison to world-class brands across all categories. Harris Interactive® also added for 2009 another base measurement reflective of these economic times that measures the perceived value of a brand based upon the money a customer pays.

"Being the customers' first choice for value and convenience has been our vision at SSA for as long as I can remember," Kenney pointed out, adding, "Our employees, and in particular our store associates who are the face of SSA to almost 2.4 million customers a day, deserve the credit for building such strong connections and establishing such broad appeal and trust in the Speedway name. When we combine competitive pricing with exceptional customer service, plus the added value of our Speedy Rewards® program, we clearly are having a very positive impact on the motoring public."

For five consecutive quarters dating back to early 2008, SSA has been rated as the best convenience store chain in terms of overall customer satisfaction in a national consumer perception survey conducted by Corporate Research International® through their website realpeopleratings.com. Ever-increasing customer appeal has also been reflected in SSA's very own Speedy Rewards® customer survey data, with record ratings quarter over quarter in 2008 and 2009 for such key metrics as Overall Satisfaction, Friendliness, Speed of Service, and Inside and Outside Cleanliness. And, SSA continues to outpace the convenience store industry and, in particular the Midwest market, in fuel and merchandise sales.
